@5PARRYING IN AD&D
================
I never use the parry rules... I have tended to use my own extremely
simple version that I think emulates the action quite well.
If the player gets the initiative he may sacrifice an attack for a parry
(perhaps fighters can get a parry skill which will give them an extra parry
for free if they succeed on a skill roll - I would make it Dex based)
The parrying person makes an attack against the opponents weapon using
is weapon speed factor as its armour class (Well its the only use I have
ever found for ther Weapon speed factor thingies!)
You can modify this down, I guess, by a set amount to make it more tricky,
the opponents level, skill and any magic could also do this.
eg - a basic roll
to parry a 2 Handed sword is AC 10 and to parry a dagger is AC 2
Or a more advanced setup - A fighter Lvl 5 with a +2 2-handed sword
is beig parried by me... the AC of the sword would be
spd-lvl-magic : 10-5-2= AC 3
Therefore it is a LOT easier to parry slow weapons but obviously it may
not be that effective. Just resolve damage normally and subtract the parry
damage from the damage caused and this is the amount that got through.
ie. It is VERY easy to parry a 2H Sword but the chances are you will not
parry ALL the damage. The dagger is fast and dirty and is a challange
to parry but anything in front of it will stop it.
eg - A 2H sword will do an average of 11 pts damage, a dagger 3 pts.
Therefore the simple act of parrying a 2H sword with a dagger would
probably still let through about 8 pts of damage. remeber to include
all the bonuses from strength and magic onto these results.
These I suppose are not proper parry rules as AD&D has a very arbitry combat
system that is supposed to simulate a full minute of combat. Think of it more
as someone deciding to fight a purely defensive battle trying to block
everything that comes at him rather than attack back. This will compensate for
the loss of attack. However higher level fighters and those of great skill will
be able to attack and defend in the same round... another example of their
great skill!
It really is simple, honest! And we have found it works...
